The Health practice, under which this position falls, focuses on building healthier lives for Africans through research, evaluation and design of health systems, products and programs; behavioral sciences; and health economics and financing.  


Genesis Health is recruiting a Programme Manager to manage a Gates Foundation-funded programme called MMC SUSTAIN. The programme aims to support the South African National Medical Male Circumcision program, working in close collaboration with the South African Department of Health. This three-year grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation seeks to support the Department of Health in achieving its goals of circumcising 2.5 million men by 2022 and decreasing the number of new HIV infections in South Africa. The programme will support the Department of Health to (a) achieve resilient local systems that enable effective management and transition of the MMC programme from scale-up to sustainability and (b) increase documentation and dissemination of good practices, lessons learnt and recommendations for the South African MMC programme.

  • Master’s degree in Public Health or any other relevant field
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience, with grant and programme management experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with and implementing donor-funded programmes in the health sector; familiarity with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation preferred
  • A good understanding o the South African health system
  • Experience with national-scale programmatic planning and providing sound strategic oversight
  • Experience working with public, private and donor agents in the health sector; building and maintaining good relationships and identifying and leveraging from collaboration opportunities
  • Financial and operational management experience for successful programme delivery
  • Excellent writing, presentation and interpersonal communication skills
  • Fluent use of written and spoken English 


Programme management:

  • Oversee all facets of the programme’s national and sub-national activities and, with the support of the programme team, lead on troubleshooting any issues that arise
  • Technical experience in the area of HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, experience in medical male circumcision strongly preferred
  • Manage overall programme timeline to ensure that all deliverables are on track and delivered in a timely manner
  • Serve as the primary contact point with sub-awardee/partner organization as it relates to day-to-day activities
  • Support Programme Director in communicating with the Department of Health, especially as it pertains to managing Technical Working Group meetings and other ad hoc meeting
  • Liaise with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation counterpart, where required, for client queries
  • Champion and collate quality deliverables and manage review and approval of Programme Director
  • Other duties as assigned 

Administrative duties:

  • Ensure the timely preparation of contracts and required documents for sub-consultants by the Programme Coordinator, as needed
  • Oversee the Programme Coordinator to ensure that programme administration is smooth.
  • Work with the Finance Officer to ensure that grant budget and financial control, ensuring expense invoices and consultants are paid in a timeous manner as well as monthly grant reporting requirements are completed to a high standard
  • Liaise with internal Genesis group services team to ensure that all Genesis processes and policies are appropriately followed
